What is DIG IT UP and what does it stand for?
DIG IT UP is a gallery and heritage lab and has
acquired a reputation as an important treasure hunter of the urban culture of Rotterdam.
Unknown images and recordings have been found and presented to the community of
Rotterdam, as unique heritage for the future.
With the recovered treasures, exhibitions, documentaries, publications, talk shows and
online platforms, DIG IT UP introduces a new and different urban history.
‘Crowdsourcing’
By means of specific interaction with the public, DIG IT UP retraces
unique photographs and other audio-visual material.
‘Network’
With the cooperation and expertise of renowned institutions, such as the Municipal Archives of Rotterdam, the found images and audio-visual materials can be judged on its real value.
‘Assignments’
We also work on behalf of companies, institutions and private
individuals. Think of shop display exhibitions, performing image research and looking or audio-visual material with the help of the public, or providing content for websites and or book publications.
‘Publicity’
Through 24/7 showcase exhibitions, guided tours, talk shows and online platforms, DIG IT UP ensures that the inhabitants of Rotterdam get acquainted with these never displayed images.
Digitalization
Using the latest digital techniques, these treasures can be saved and handed over, with consent of the owner, to the municipal archives. These are often
unique amateur recordings, which can no longer be used or played on their original equipment. DIG IT UP is able to convert this material before returning it to the owners. Special collections in archives of companies and institutions can also be converted.
‘Walk-in Lab’
In the low-threshold workshop of DIG IT UP (the so-called heritage lab), individuals can have their old recordings preserved. Photos are perfectly scanned, digitalized and edited. Film recordings come back to life and audio tapes from the past are audible again. This way, the rediscovered and unique material is made available again for the owners and simultaneously added to the collective memory of the city.
